We as moms do it all. From early morning wake-ups to bedtime routines, from work responsibilities to endless household tasks—it can feel like there’s never a pause button. And if your kids play sports… whew, the constant run around! Some days, it feels like the to-do list will never end, and the weight of everything on your shoulders can feel heavy.
And yet, on some days, it’s okay to do nothing. Really. To pause, breathe, and just rest.
The Guilt of Rest
As moms, we often feel guilty when we take a moment for ourselves, because the work never ends. “The laundry won’t fold itself,” “The dishes will still be there,” “I should be doing something productive.” Sound familiar? That guilt is normal—but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t rest.
Rest is not a luxury—it’s essential, especially for us moms. We are constantly giving and pouring into others. Rest is what allows us to come back to our tasks with more patience, energy, and focus.
The Work Will Still Be There
The world will not fall apart if you take a break. The dishes, the laundry, the emails—they aren’t going anywhere. And guess what? You’ll handle them just fine when you’re ready. Rest is not giving up and it’s definitely not failure. It’s giving yourself time to recharge and preparing you to show up better, for yourself and your family.
What We Do Matters
Never forget that what you do matters. Every meal you make, every task you complete, every hug and word of encouragement you give — it’s all important. Resting does not diminish your efforts or your impact. It’s actually needed, because the work we do is so important. When we take care of ourselves, we’re better equipped to care for those around us.
Self-Care Is Part of Doing It All
Resting is a part of self-care, and it doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes it’s just taking time for yourself. Watch a show you’ve been meaning to catch up on, read a book, or sit quietly with a cup of coffee while the kids play nearby. It’s okay to pause, even if the day isn’t done. These small moments of rest help you recharge—and not only that, you deserve it. Because the truth is, the work is never done.
So today, if you feel like doing nothing, do nothing. Sit. Breathe. Rest. The work will still be there when you’re ready, and you’ll tackle it with renewed strength. You do it all—and what you do is important. Taking a break doesn’t take away from that. It’s part of the journey.
If you struggle with taking breaks too, share your thoughts below. Let’s remind each other that it’s okay and it’s necessary!
